I’m so excited to share today’s recipe. If you love taco’s and love burgers you will love my recipe for Mexican Burgers! It’s the best of both worlds in the burger form. I got the idea from a local restaurant we ate at years ago. I had a taco-like burger and loved the idea. So of course, in normal food blogging fashion I went home and re-created the recipe. And I’ve been making it for years, and yet I’ve never shared the recipe. Although, the original version I’ve been making of this burger was not as healthy. It contained lots of cheddar cheese, a packet of taco seasoning, and instead of whole-wheat buns I used garlic Texas Toast. I was happy to make this burger healthier, so I can enjoy it more often.
Let’s talk about how these Mexican Burgers cook. I combined a variety of seasonings to make a taco seasoning that I mixed into one pound of Laura’s Lean Beef, Ground Sirloin. By making your own taco seasoning you will cut out most of the sodium and unwanted calories. Once all the seasoning is combined its time to form the patties. I like thin ground beef patties so I like to flatten them out before they hit the grill. Once the grill is preheated I spray a little cooking spray on the grill. Then place the burgers on top. Just before the burgers are done cooking I place the whole-wheat burger buns on the grill to toast for a minute. Once the burgers are done I place sour cream on each bun followed by pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, fresh cilantro, and slices of avocado. I divide the ingredients between four burgers.
I’m going to warn you now that these Mexican Burgers can get very messy. So make sure you give your friends a few extra napkins before they belly up to this flavorful burger.

1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon dried onion flakes
½ teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon paprika
¼ teaspoon ground cumin
dash of cayenne pepper
1 pound Laura’s Lean Beef, Ground Sirloin
4 Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns
1 tablespoon reduced fat sour cream, divided
¼ cup pico de gallo, divided
¼ cup shredded iceberg lettuce
1 tablespoon cilantro, minced
1 haas avocado, sliced and divided
1.) Preheat grill to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the grill reaches temperature clean and keep lid closed.
2.) In a large bowl, combine the chili powder, ground coriander, garlic powder, oregano, dried onion flakes, kosher salt, paprika, ground cumin and the dash of cayenne pepper. Mix well. Then place the ground sirloin in the bowl. Begin to mix well with hands until all of the seasoning is evenly distributed through the ground meat. Divide evenly to make 4 patties.
3.) Place hamburger patties on the grill. Grill for 4 minutes on each side until the center is light pink. During the last minute of grilling place hamburger buns on the top part of the grill grates. Let them toast for 1 minute. Remove the burgers and buns off the grill.
4.) Top each burger with 1 teaspoon reduced fat sour cream, 1-tablespoon pico de gallo and shredded lettuce, 1 teaspoon minced cilantro, and 3 avocado slices. Enjoy immediately.
