Kids are now back to school and like most parents, you’re back to the questions about what makes a great lunch - one that’s right for your kid’s nutritional needs that doesn’t meet the waste basket fate. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you’re packing lunches this week.
Avoid Over Packing
Off they go to school and there you are wondering – will Mary really eat all her food and did I pack enough? Cue the overly packed lunch box that includes way more than they need. Take a deep breath and think of how much your little one eats during the weekend. Let that be your guide as you pack that lunch this week.
Food For Kids
As back to school season hits, so do all the labels on a wide variety of products trying to convince you that your kid absolutely “needs” this or that product. But how healthy are these particular items? Remember to go back to the basics. Read the label carefully – look for the items that provide an adequate amount of protein and voilà! That simple.
Got Protein?
One thing that you should keep a close watch on is protein content. Growing kids need enough protein to keep up with their needs. Be sure to include snacks like yogurt and jerky that contain about 7-9 grams of protein. They’re tasty and easy to pack on the go. Look for Laura’s Lean Beef Organic Grass Fed Beef Jerky which packs about 12 grams of protein per 3 oz.
Remember The Veggies
When you think of a healthy lunch, fruits seem to be the easy no brainer option – but what about the veggies? Sure there aren’t many easy veggie snack options out there, but that just means you have to get a little more creative. Think dips for small carrots and perhaps veggie wraps with a yummy sauce to add flavor. Continue offering different options and stick with it. It’s worth it! Make it fun, and add color to the lunch box. Engage their eyes, and their taste buds will follow!
