Low fat lifestyles
Starting a new way of eating can be daunting. Knowing where to start can take the aggravation and fear out of the entire process. Below are several ideas to keep in mind.
1. Be realistic - If weight loss is your direction, start with small, achievable goals.
2. Clear out your refrigerator and pantry - Get rid of pies, cakes, cookies and processed foods.
3. Restock your refrigerator and pantry with healthy, wholesome ingredients - Purchase low-fat or fat-free products for their full fat counterparts. Buy whole grain pastas, breads and grains; and stock up with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
4. Monitor portions and serving sizes - Examine food labels and nutrition facts, and understand what constitutes a serving size.
5. Always eat breakfast - As well as being an important source of vitamins and minerals, a good breakfast comprising whole grain cereal with fat-free or low fat milk, fruit and yogurt will be a healthy way to start the day.
6. Drink plenty of water - Water is essential for digestion, and also helps us feel fuller for longer.
7. Get moving - Regular exercise is good for both physical and mental health – plus it will help you lose weight.
8. Eat healthy snacks - Keep healthy snacks on hand such as nuts, granola bars, yogurt, fresh vegetables, whole wheat crackers, dried fruit, etc. This will help you avoid over-snacking on cookies and chips.
The good news is living the low-fat lifestyle doesn’t mean having to make a lot of sacrifices. It’s about great taste and moderation with variety and balance.
