May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. This is near and dear to my heart because I have a strong family history of melanoma. As someone who loves exercising outdoors, I have had to be proactive and take extra precautions for prevention since consistent exercise outdoors means consistent exposure to the sun’s rays. Did you know that skin cancer affects 1 in 5 Americans? It is estimated that over 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year. There are 3 … continued…

Last Spring we talked about the importance of good exercise shoes in the post “Exercise Shoes: More than an Accessory.” In that post we learned that shoes should be replaced every 350-500 miles (depending on what you are doing and how much you weigh). If you primarily exercise outside, you know that your shoes can get dirty well before it is time to replace them, so here is a great way to clean them so they look like you just … continued…
Last month I posted on why the exercise ball is one of my favorite pieces of exercise equipment, especially when doing core exercises. An exercise ball is also great to work into your regular strength training routine because it engages your core muscles while you are actively working other muscle groups. When resistance training with the ball, follow the same recommendations that you would when doing your normal strength training routine: • Work each major muscle group 2-3 days/week, … continued…

One of my favorite pieces of exercise equipment is a stability ball. They typically cost around $15, so it is a very affordable way to mix up your exercise routine at home! Most gyms have them too, so be sure to try one out if you haven’t already! The ball is very effective at strengthening the core (abdominal and lower back) muscles because you are forced to stabilize your body throughout each exercise. Here a few of my favorites. – … continued…
A few months ago we looked at using a resistance band for strength training. If you’ve been doing those same exercises for the past few months, it may be time to mix things up a bit! Here are six more exercises to give your muscles a bit more of a challenge. Click here to review the first post for some tips on using a resistance band safely and effectively. Lat Pulldown (Back): Start by holding the band with hands … continued…
Hopefully those of you that were planning to join a gym this year have found one and are already working towards your goals! (Click here for my post from last month on Tips for Finding a Gym if you are still searching.) Have you ever gone to the gym and felt like it took you forever to do everything you wanted to do? Have you ever wondered if the piece of equipment you are using is the best one … continued…
In honor of “Healthy Weight Week,” take time to just celebrate where you are and focus on making day to day healthy choices no matter what size you are. By mid January, many people are struggling to keep up with New Year’s resolutions. This could be due to unrealistic plans or goals. While it is true that our country faces continuously rising rates of obesity, we also are a nation with poor self-acceptance. Women and teenagers are especially at risk … continued…
With 2013 in full swing, many people are starting off the year with a goal to exercise. Are you looking to join a gym to help you meet this goal? If so, here are some things to consider before joining. 1. Is it convenient? Lack of convenience is the main reason people stop going to the gym. It’s hard enough to fit exercise into our busy lives, and if you add a lot of commute time on top of that, … continued…
